I got this note from Anna Hayward through the HealthFraud mailing list and she has given me permission to reproduce it. It shows my view of matters (without the aggression) perfectly. Enjoy!
In my experience, the real reason parents get so desperate is because society does not accept people are different. We are not "suffering" from autism, we're just not neurotypical! So a parent is told their child is autistic and what they see is lost dreams, stigma and social exclusion. But these things are not caused by autism, they are caused by society's attitudes towards autistic people, and disabled people in general.
The parents I know who have accepted their child's autism diagnosis most calmly, and been least likely to try "All sorts of things I now consider bananas", have been parents who were already familiar with disabled and autistic people. The ones who coped worst were the types who considered disabled children to happen to other families, and had previously spent a lifetime avoiding disabled people, and looking down their noses at them.
No one sane is going to be thrilled to realise their child is autistic. Autistic kids are bloody hard work! They often don't sleep, can be hyperactive, don't or won't tell you when they're sick, can be obsessional and rigid to an irritating degree, and the services and education available for them is patchy and you have to fight for absolutely *everything*. So it's really hard work and can be demoralising. However, most of the problem is not the autism, it's the lack of support for autistic families, the lack of appropriate education, speech therapy, occupational therapy... even things like dentists and opticians. It has taken me 6 years to find an optician who is prepared to deal with my son! (most cried off on the grounds that if he couldn't tolerate the whole eye test they wouldn't get paid by the government). My son is now in an excellent school, but we had to sue the education authority to get it. Fighting bureacracy on behalf of my son is a full-time job.
Until society is more accepting, and the powers that be are properly organised and informed to help autistic families, people will continue to see autism as the bogeyman and have this "Not my child" attitude that does so much damage. As it is, I notice more and more autism horror stories on the web, invariably being used to sell this quack treatment or that quack treatment. Using the Medical Model for autism is so inappropriate! We're not ill - my son is not ill! Why have a treatment for something that is not an illness?

The Cure for Income Irregularity
Are you troubled by occasional irregularity?
Don’t worry, I’m talking about your income. When you have an irregular source of income, it can be like manic depression: one month, you get a couple of big checks, and you’re rich! Next month, where did the money go?
You might have irregular income for a variety of reasons:
* Temp work
* Commissions or bonuses
* Independent contracting or freelancing
* Advertising revenue
* eBay, Etsy, or other online sales
Believe me, I know about this firsthand. In the past couple of years, my income in a given month has ranged from $0 to $18,000. (This is not an exaggeration, although the high end of the spectrum was a big-time outlier.) I’d be happy to tell you what a typical month looks like…except that I don’t have typical months. You know the saying “past performance is no indication of future returns?” I think they were talking about me. Looking ahead, I know what the next couple of months look like, but beyond that? Could be the goose that lays the golden eggs–or just a big goose egg.
The most common way people deal with zig-zag income is to try to match checks to expenses. As in, “We have a check for $1200 coming in; that can cover the repair on the water heater.” This is a good way to end up in debt.
Even though this type of irregular income is common, most personal finance books assume you put on a suit, go to an office, and take home a boringly regular paycheck like it’s 1955 and you work for IBM. My friends Danny and Shauna Ahern, a chef and a food writer, are more typical of people I know today: he gets a fairly predictable paycheck, but her income, from assignments and ad revenue, is all over the place. This year is going pretty well for them, but they have no idea how well.
“When you have a big check coming in, it’s like, woo! We have money!” says Shauna. “We have to be penurious for weeks; then the money comes in and we can afford a massage. Then we’re back to where we were.”
Furthermore, the landlord, the electric company, and the supermarket prefer to be paid on time. Just depositing all my income into a checking account and spending what’s there doesn’t work. It might work this month, but what if this turns out to be a golden-egg sort of month and I overspend? What happens next month? How do I know how much money I can spend and save when I don’t know what my income will be in July?
I need to put my income through some sort of industrial smoothing machine. In other words, I need to understand my cash flow. Yes, this is going to involve some math. But we’re not talking linear algebra here. It’s addition and division. Let me show you how it works. If, like me, you’re in a couple where one partner is salaried and the other is paid irregularly, I’ll show you how to deal with that, too.
Let’s cook those books
Okay, pull up Excel, Google Spreadsheets, or a Moleskine. It’s spreadsheet time.
First, list off your expected income, as far out as you know it. In my case, I list everything for which I’ve billed clients and they haven’t paid yet. To this list, add your current checking balance. The total represents your cash. For me, this number currently adds up to $9,500.
What if you think you’re going to be paid for something but you’re not sure? You can discount it: write down half the amount, or three-quarters. Because I work on assignment, I’m generally able to put something on the list at least a month before I receive the check.
Next, turn to your list of monthly expenses, which should include your fixed expenses, your spending money, and your savings. For me, this number is $4,972. (We don’t spend that much every month; a big chunk goes to savings and self-employment taxes.)
Now–work with me here–divide your cash by your expenses. I get 1.9, which means that in about two months, unless I invoice more jobs, I’m out of money.
That’s no good. However, I’m omitting something important: my wife’s paycheck. (Incidentally, because she works for the government, her salary is a matter of public record. Puts the whole Facebook privacy thing in perspective, doesn’t it?)
So I only need to look at the portion of our expenses covered by my income. That means I subtract my wife’s monthly paycheck from our monthly expenses. I get $4,972 – $4,000 = $972.
That means my share of the monthly expenses is $972. Divide $9,500 by $972, and you get 11.1. Great–I could bill nothing new for the next 11.1 months, and we’re fine, as long as my wife doesn’t lose her job.
How many months of cash flow is enough? I like to keep it to greater than six months. If it drops below that, I need to scrounge up some new assignments–or reduce some expenses.
The final ingredient: “pay yourself as if you’re an employee,” as Get Rich Slowly’s J.D. Roth puts it. I do this by transferring a weekly allowance from one account to another.
Congratulations: you’ve just smoothed out your finances with the Steamroller of Truth.
A couple of weeks ago, Shauna and Danny did their calculations and set up a second checking account to receive their weekly spending money. The result, according to Shauna? “This is the first time we haven’t been worried about money in two years.”
The downside
This system works well for me. But you might want to consider:
* If someone takes a long time to pay you, you can run out of cash even when your cash flow looks fine. I keep an eye on my checking balance and sometimes put off some savings until the following month when necessary.
* If your income is only a little irregular–sometimes you get a bonus, say, on top of base pay–what I do is probably overkill.
* My wife’s income is enough to cover our fixed expenses, so we’ve tried dedicating my pay to savings. The predictable result: less savings, and little incentive for me (a natural born couch potato) to drum up business.
* If your income is not only irregular but unpredictable, and you don’t know what’s going to happen even next month, you’re probably better off averaging past income rather than calculating cash flow. J.D. Roth has instructions for doing that.
Finally, if you get an adrenaline rush from riding the bipolar coaster of irregular income, this will ruin it for you. That’s the point.

How to Create Perpetual Ads in Cyberspace
Well, so now you have a website. And you want some traffic. Instant traffic. LOTS of TRAFFIC!!!
What do you do?
Write an article with advertisements and submit them to article banks with links to your website. Simple as that? No. It’s easier said than done.
In this article, I will instruct you on how to submit and monetize your articles to websites such as PerpetualAds.com. This is a simple instruction on how to post articles with perpetual ads for instant traffic to monetize your article.
Rule #1.) Be creative. Articles get boring without any pictures or videos and articles without a title that captures the readers’ attention will just get ignored. So, add an interesting picture or a video to your article with a back-link to your website, if possible, and create a really gripping title!
Rule #2.) Have a topic. You need to have a topic to talk about and add enough content for that topic. The topic usually is your thesis statement sentence placed at the end of the first paragraph. Enough content usually means 5 paragraphs about the topic. More than 5 paragraphs and people start to wander off.
Rule #3.) Use a Formula. You need to follow a formula in writing your article. If you can write enough articles with this formula, you will soon create your own style of writing articles. Your style will then differentiate you from the rest of the writers in cyberspace and the real world. What I usually follow is this 5 step formula:
a. Introduction statement paragraph followed by your thesis statement as the last sentence of the 1st paragraph.
b. Supporting paragraph of your thesis statement with an example as your 2nd paragraph.
c. Supporting paragraph of your thesis statement with another example as your 3rd paragraph
d. Contrary paragraph of your thesis statement with supporting theories or examples as your 4th paragraph
e. Create an ending paragraph that vindicates your thesis statement by reinstating it with scientific evidence or case studies.
Rule #4.) Advertise and Get Paid. Include links for any word you think is a keyword for your Article and link it back to your website but do it sparingly! You must also include your campaigns to monetize your writing efforts to perpetuate your ads in cyberspace! Do that strategically within the confines of your article.
Rule #5.) Review, Edit, and Publish. Edit, Edit, Edit! Edit your articles at least 3 times by running it through spell checker or a friend! Until it is the best looking article you’ve ever made without any spelling or grammatical errors, don’t publish it. People will turn off to misspelled and incorrect grammar every chance they get! Also, don’t forget to include meta tags for Search Engine Optimization before publishing it.

Get paid taking surveys
I am one of the millions of people out there today who is trying to make extra money on the World Wide Web. What I have come to realize that many may have not is that making money is not nearly as easy it seems, and it is definitely not as easy as sitting in your home doing surveys for cash! I would like to think that I am somewhat savvy about some of the more obvious scams out there, but I'm sure I've been taken advantage of at one time or another, so here are a few of my ideas on how to avoid the really obvious scammers out there trying to get your money and your information.
Anywhere you go on the web these days you see tons of advertising for “work at home” jobs that will pay you for doing surveys. Clicking on these sites is not dangerous in my opinion, but here is the first place to watch out for the biggest scammers. Many of these companies want you to pay to be an affiliate or a member in order to use their data bases and find survey companies. If this is what you want to do, its fine, but be aware of what you are getting for your money. There are legitimate sites out there that allow you to check the survey company out on before you waste your time with it, and I have found these sites to be invaluable.
If you do decide to continue on with the venture, be aware of what you are actually signing up to do! Real paid surveys are out there, but they are not usually quick and easy things to do, which is how most of these fast cash sites make it sound. Most of the real surveys take anywhere from 20-30 minutes each, they are very detailed and sometimes are hard or boring to follow, depending on the subject matter. The quick cash survey sites make it seem like you just have to take a few surveys a day to start earning money or prizes, but that is really an understatement. If you really wanted to make money from some of these sites, you would be on your computer for hours and hours every day, most likely earning “points”, not cash! It is a very time-consuming business.
When looking into a company to give your information to do surveys, I have found that the more legitimate ones are the research sites. These sites will not promise you big bucks, usually, but will send you surveys in your email inbox if you meet their qualifications. You have to be patient for these surveys, but they are the ones you will most likely make money on, and they usually just send you a check! These surveys are few and far between, as well, so please don't expect to earn a living waiting for a company to need your opinion.
“Free Offers” are not always free! This is a big scam that you can avoid by reading the small print! If you are signing up for a trial, samples, or whatever, read on to see if these people will later charge your credit card or if you will keep receiving things! Don't EVER give a site your information without checking it out first. BE SMART! There are many sites out there that want you to fill out offers for money. I think this is the biggest of all the scams out there, because if you just start giving your information out, you will almost certainly be taken advantage of, not to mention the thousands of emails you will start receiving.
Be aware of large banners in the middle of the page that seem like you have to fill them out in order to go on. These can be avoided by scrolling down to a link that says “no thanks”, or the like. These banners are dangerous because they really look legitimate. Do not put information into a banner unless you want this offer! I have found this scam on a few of the “easy cash for surveys” sites.
To conclude, I would say from my experience that you could possibly earn some money by doing surveys online. I think a great deal of caution is in order, but if is something that you are interested in, you can try it for very little or no money down. Just be aware that it takes a lot more time than you probably have to fill out countless surveys, and in most cases, the offer is not going to make you rich any time soon. Remember: nothing in life is free!

HOW TO WOW BLOG EDITORS (AND GET PUBLISHED)
Today’s guest post comes to us from Laura Spencer, a well-known crack writer, blogger and head editor at Freelance Folder, one of the blogosphere’s largest hangouts for freelancers. She responded to a post written last week about when your guest post is held hostage – and her comment was so well thought out that I asked her for her opinions on how to be a great guest poster. Here it is – enjoy!
So, you’ve decided to incorporate guest posting into your marketing strategy. Good for you.
Guest posting can be an effective way to reach your target audience.
Guest poster Chris Birk did a good job recently of describing how a writer feels when a guest post is accepted but has not yet been published. However, with all due respect to Chris’s excellent insights, that’s only half the story.
As an editor at a blog, a writer for three blogs, and an owner of two blogs–I have been on the receiving end of a lot of guest posts over the years. I can tell you one thing: While many guest posters are extremely talented, some are not. A few are pushy and some are even rude.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of emailing off four, five, or more guest posts quickly and then expecting to see your work on the blog of your choice the very next day. After all, the blog editor/owner has probably been waiting breathlessly for your little darlings, right?
Sorry, no. Usually, things don’t work that way.
Thoughtful Actions to Help You Get Published
First of all, every single blog is different. Every blog editor or owner has different expectations and needs. This can make it tough to break in as a guest author.
However, there are some relatively easy steps any guest author can take. These steps will usually increase the chances of getting a post published. Here are my suggestions:
Before your write your guest post, read the blog where you want to submit your guest post. I mean REALLY read it. Take the time to study the last four or five posts published. Look at the style and tone of the blog. Scan the topics that have already been covered.
Look for a writer’s guidelines page. Not all blogs will have this page and sometimes the page is hard to find. But, when a guidelines page is there make sure that you follow it to the letter. This page is a blueprint for you and usually describes what a blog is looking for.
If the blog is missing a writer’s guideline page, that doesn’t necessarily mean that a blog doesn’t accept guest posts–but, it could. Look at the blog site again to see if any other guest authors have already been published. If in doubt, a polite email to the site owner may be in order.
Make your post as editor-friendly as possible. This includes proofreading your post thoroughly. If possible, format the post in HTML. If the blog uses images, find a royalty-free image that fits your topic and attach it your post.
Once the post is accepted, be sure to iron out the important details, such as whether or not you will be paid for the post and who owns the published post.
What to Do While Waiting to Be Published
Oops! You’ve sent your post in. It’s been a day or two and you haven’t heard back from the editor yet. Or, the editor said they would use your post, but it’s been over a week and they haven’t published it.
It’s time to shake the dust from your feet and move on, right?
Wrong! If you submitted your post to a large blog, remember that they may get dozens of guest posts each week. Often, posts are scheduled in advance (sometimes way in advance).
If you submitted to a smaller blog, the site owner may be blogging in addition to doing a regular job. He or she may be busy with work, or they may even be on vacation.
Be patient. It’s perfectly acceptable to email your contact and ask about the status of your post.
Common Mistakes Guest Authors Make
Here are some common mistakes that I’ve seen guest authors make. (You’re reading this post, so you now know better. I don’t want to catch any of you making these mistakes. )
Don’t submit:
A guest post that has nothing to do with the topic of the blog
A guest post that is a thinly disguised advertorial, chock full of affiliate links
A guest post that has been used elsewhere
A guest post that you wouldn’t be proud to put on your own site
So, you’ve decided to incorporate guest posting into your marketing strategy. Good for you.

Buying a Used Car – Learn From Others Mistakes
I never knew just how long it would take, and how difficult it would be, buying a used car. Being that I was a complete car buying novice, I did not realize that car purchasing was a lengthy process, fraught with anger, disappointment, and frustration. After my wife and I found what seemed to be a good deal on craigslist, we did a test drive, and made sure that we were protected by getting a vehicle history report and a mechanical inspection. Everything seemed to be just perfect, and we were willing to buy the car. The problem was, we had no idea what to do next. To further complicate matters, the seller was an immigrant to Canada and did not know the process either.
No problem, we thought, Google will solve all of our problems. We looked up through our local insurance agency what steps we had to take, arranged a time to meet with the seller, and decided to do everything in one day. Unfortunately, a number of problems arose.
First, we had to get access to our money. Again, this shouldn’t be an issue, as we had already transferred all our savings from our online bank account to our chequing account. There was a branch not two blocks from the sellers house, so we would stop by and get the money on our way there. Except when we got there, the branch was closed. Not only that, because it was the Saturday of a long weekend, every single branch was closed. Yes, we definitely should have thought of that ahead of time, but we didn’t, as we are new to this whole process. Simply writing a cheque would have been convenient for us, but obviously the seller would not want to accept the promise of money in exchange for his vehicle.
So we went to the post office in an attempt to buy money orders, but for some strange reason, the post office will only sell you money orders up to the amount of $999.99. Therefore we would have to buy many multiples of them, at $5.50 each. Okay, well, that’s the price we pay for being stupid, right? Except the transaction won’t go through. I guess there is some sort of limit on our account that won’t let us debit quite a few thousand of dollars. Well then, we thought to ourselves, let’s just do them one at a time. Hurray! The first one works. Boo! The second one didn’t.
That ended that long day of frustration and not being able to buy the car that we had the money for, but simply could not get access to. We even tried calling their call center, but of course, that was closed too. Honestly, doing my banking through a credit union is a wonderful thing, except when it comes to situations like these. All the major banks were still in business on the Saturday of a long weekend, just not our small local credit union.
So after the long weekend we decide to try to buy the car again. Luckily for us the seller wasn’t in a rush to sell it, and was content to wait for us to get him the money. This time the bank was open. We were actually able to save enough that by raiding our emergency fund we could pay for the car outright. So we got a registered check for the majority of the cost of the vehicle, had a money order for another thousand, and got cash just in case we were able to bring down the price of the vehicle through negotiation, as the mechanical inspection revealed that the tires would need to be replaced quite soon.
So on the Tuesday, we met with the seller and started to go over the paperwork that needed to be filled out. At this point, we realized that his wife was on the registration of the vehicle, and as such, would need to sign off on the sale of the car. Except she’s at work, and won’t be home for another couple of hours. Perfect. Just in time for all the insurance places to close, and prevent us from getting our vehicle yet again. So in desperation, we end up calling an insurance salesperson who I found about through a coworker. She offers the wonderful service of doing all the registration paperwork for you, and will meet you anywhere you want, but the problem was that her insurance quote was $30/month more expensive than any other place we asked. But we wanted the car, so we called her anyways, and a few hectic hours later we were driving home in our new vehicle.
Oh, and as for negotiating, it lasted about 30 seconds when I made the offer to split the cost of new tires with the seller, and he said no, the price was not negotiable. Fair enough.
Regardless, the sale of the vehicle finally went through, and we are now the proud owners of a slightly used vehicle. It has (almost) all the features we wanted, is the fancy classy model, has really, really nice floor mats, and was the perfect price. Now we just have to worry about paying for insurance, and gas, and maintaining the vehicle, and not getting into an accident… oh dear.
Tips For Buying a Used Car in a Private Sale
Negotiate the final cost of the vehicle before you are invested in the car. If you wait as long as I did, then when they simply say “no”, you have no bargaining room to walk away or threaten to leave.
Get a registered cheque ahead of time. Don’t wait until the last minute. If you’re not sure on the final cost of the vehicle, get one for the cost as you plan on initially offering, and bring cash for the rest of the asking price (or up until what you are comfortable with paying for the car).
Don’t use money orders, because if you’re buying a $15,000 car, and you have to pay $5.50 for each money order, then that would be $82.50 in extra fees that you’re tacking on yourself.
Go over the paperwork. Know who has to sign what, and make sure that all the parties involved are there at the time of sale.
